Katie and Marcello were spending the weekend with friends near Charlottesville, VA and took advantage of their trip to take their engagement photos while they were there! We met up for their Barboursville Vineyards wedding engagement session at the historic ruins that are on the property. (The staff at Barboursville Vineyards by the way, went above-and-beyond to be helpful to us that day! Special shoutout to them for that!)

The mansion that once belonged to Governor James Barbour was based on designs by his friend, Thomas Jefferson. The home was completed in 1822 but would be destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1884. It’s interesting to think that the structure spent so little time being a home, and hundreds of years as a ruin, but it makes such a stunning backdrop for this striking couple’s portraits!

Katie and Marcello popped out of their car in the parking lot all smiles, and I had the best time exploring the vineyards with them on a rare 65-degree day in February!

These two met online and bonded over a shared sense of adventure. Katie joked that things shifted out of the friend-zone when she earned his respect while ‘scrambling over rocks like a billy goat’ hiking Old Rag together.

A couple years later, Marcello surprised Katie by proposing on New Year’s Eve at the botanical gardens in Washington, DC.

I can’t wait for their Congressional Country Club wedding in Bethesda Maryland this spring!
