Tips for Engagement Photos with Dogs

I’m often asked if it’s OK to have engagement photos with dogs, and of course, the answer is, ‘yes!’

I love when MAP couples find ways to make their engagement photos personal and special to them. Engagement locations and beautiful outfits are two ways they do this. And another way is by bringing their beloved pup along to help document this special season in the couple’s lives!

Dog owners love their fur-babies and enjoy spending time with them. Plus, their dogs are part of the family, so why shouldn’t they get to be featured in some of the photos?

With a little planning, these engagement photos with dogs tips should help ensure you capture the perfect engagement photos with your beloved puppers!

9 Engagement Photos with Dogs Tips

  1. First of all, communicate with your photographer before your session! Engagement photographers are used to special requests and can help make plans that will make sure you have a successful session.

  2. Bring along a family member or friend who wouldn’t mind tagging along on your session to take care of your dog while you are in shots without your dog. Just make sure this isn’t someone who would make you nervous that they may sneak peeks of you posing!

  3. Start your session at your home or a family member’s home so you can begin your session with your dog and then leave the pup safely at home while you enjoy the rest of your session.

  4. Hire a dog sitter! One Richmond MAP Couple hired a dog sitter to bring their pup to the wedding venue so he could be in their wedding portraits. The sitter then drove the dog back home after wedding photos with the dog were done.

  5. Choose a dog-friendly location for your session. Make sure it’s not a crowded location where there may be lots of other dogs.

  6. Confirm in advance that any venues where you are photographing allow dogs.

  7. Consider accessories. A freshly groomed pup sporting a cute leash adorned with florals and greenery or an adorable bow-tie is sure to steal the show! Think of adorable ways to make sure your dog looks his best!

  8. Wear something that would allow you to be able to bend down on your dog’s level. Walking shots are really cute, but a photo where you’re all down on the same level is a nice pose, too.

  9. Bring treats for your dog if he responds well to bribery! Consider packing some water, too, if you’ll be gone long or if it’s hot out.
